Loose engine cover prompts Dodge Journey, Fiat Freemont recall
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is recalling nearly 350,000 crossover utility vehicles worldwide due to a faulty engine cover that can fall of and potentially cause a vehicle fire.
The recall covers Dodge Journey and Fiat Freemont CUVs from the 2011-2015 model years equipped with FCA’s 2.4L four-cylinder engine. V6-powered models are not included in the recall.
The recall was issued after FCA received three complaints of loose engine covers out of Chile. FCA notes that “in each case, the vehicle had been driven extensively on unpaved or uneven surfaces.”
FCA says that if the plastic engine cover falls off and comes in contact with a hot exhaust manifold it could cause a fire. So far the defect has caused one injury, which was described as minor.
According to FCA the recall covers 144,416 vehicles in the United States, 43,679 vehicles in Canada, 46,231 vehicles in Mexico and 115,405 vehicles outside of the NAFTA region. About 10 percent of the 349,731 vehicles recalled remain in dealer stock.
FCA will remedy the problem by installing upgraded engine cover retainers. The recall campaign is scheduled to begin next month.
