FiatChrysler issued a safety campaign in North America for dealers to check on the brakes of nearly 15,000 Grand Cherokee SUVs, blaming suppliers for the problems.

Fiat-Chrysler is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles built between December 9, 2015, to January 14, 2016, as the left front brake caliper may crack due to the fact that it was made from the wrong material, the company said in a notice to the US Highway Traffic Safety Administration. There are 14,769 SUVs in the US affected by the problem, and some additional 396 vehicles are being recalled in Canada, along with 287 in markets outside the NAFTA region. The company will notify owners and dealers will inspect the front left brake caliper and, depending on its casting date, replace it. FCA has not yet provided a notification schedule, but issued a statement in which it said it launched an investigation after a supplier advised FCA that its normal manufacturing process was not followed during the production of a small number of brake calipers. Eight such calipers may have been installed on vehicles, but there are no complains or accidents so far over drivers loosing stopping power.

In a separate announcement, FCA also issued another recall of an estimated 442 trucks in the US to replace the modules that control their electric power steering systems. Another investigation determined a small group of control modules, a supplied component, may have been contaminated during the manufacturing process. Over time, the faulty components may cause steering issues or complete loss of power steering assist. Affected vehicles are certain 2015-2016 Ram 1500 pickups, while some additional 59 models are being recalled in Canada, along with seven in Mexico and six outside the NAFTA region.
