Fate Of The Furious Trailer Is Action-Packed And You Can Watch It Here

Remember when The Fast and the Furious films used to be about street racing?

We already knew it was coming, but the first trailer for The Fate of the Furious (aka Fast and Furious 8) is here – and it doesn’t disappoint. Everything we’ve come to expect from the franchise is here: exotic cars, testosterone-filled fist-fights and of course explosive automotive action set-pieces that defy plausibility. What we didn’t expect to see, however, is lead character Dominic Toretto turn against his ‘family’ crew. Essentially, this is going to be the Captain America Civil War of Fast and Furious films. New lead antagonist Cipher played by Charlize Theron, who also starred in Mad Max: Fury Road is the root of Toretto’s betrayal, and we also see the return of characters from the last film including Deckard Shaw, the last villain played by Jason Statham and Kurt Russell’s character Mr. Nobody.

Of course, the cars are the real stars – you don’t watch the Fast and Furious films for the plot. It’s every gearhead’s guilty pleasure. Among the exotics and muscle cars shown off in the new trailer are a Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, a Plymouth GTX and a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. And of course no Fast and Furious film is complete without a bunch of Dodge Chargers wreaking havoc. If you thought the last few films in the series were destructive, the eighth installment looks to be upping the ante even further: within the first 30 seconds we see several cars get taken out spectacularly by a wrecking ball.

There’s also a multi-car showdown in New York with a police car pileup rivaling The Blues Brothers and, what is sure to be the film’s most memorable and over-the-top set-piece, an arctic chase featuring an orange Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, some snowmobiles, military SUVs, a tank and a massive submarine which makes a grand entrance destroying everything in its path. Only in Fast and Furious. Directed by F. Gary Gray, whose film credits include The Italian Job remake, The Fate of the Furious stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Chris “Ludacris” Bridges among others. It will be roaring into cinemas on April 14, 2017.

The franchise still has plenty of fuel left in the tank too: you can expect Fast and Furious 9 and 10 to follow in the coming years. Furious 7 smashed box office records when it was released in 2015 and, quite remarkably, went on to become the sixth highest grossing film of all time making $1.5 billion worldwide, thanks in part to the publicity of Paul Walker’s death at the time. Whether The Fate of The Furious can overtake it remains to be seen.
