It’s safe to say that many automotive sites just pay homage to the car gods, and little beyond those mechanized, four-wheeled machines are ever actually covered. We however, here at BoldRide aren’t just about ludicrously fast supercars. Rather, we are lovers and connoisseurs of all things absurdly fast. And that includes things with only two wheels.
Now, in the world of motorcycles, nonsensically fast has a very different meaning than that in the automotive world. Speed and acceleration are compounded by a shocking lack of weight, meaning you don’t need that much horsepower to go extremely fast. That said, it hasn’t stopped a few motorcycle companies from pushing the envelope of what is technically feasible and what is undoubtedly insane. Here’s a list of the top five fastest and most illogical motorcycles on the planet.
MV Agusta F4 R 312
MV Agustas have always been fast. Even in the 1950s through 1960s, MV Agusta’s café racer style bikes were some of the best on the market, but in 2007 the company launched the F4 R 312 and all bets were off. The bike was so named for its top speed of 312 kph—that’s 193 mph for us Yanks. The F4 R 312 develops 183 horsepower and 85 ft-lbs of torque, which doesn’t seem like much, but with a dry weight of just under 400 lbs, that 183 horsepower is plenty to get this superbike going in a hurry.
Unquestionably, everyone on the planet with a need for two-wheel speed has heard of the Hayabusa. Whether that’s because of the countless YouTube videos of it being pitted against amazing supercars, getting a turbo strapped to it, or because your friend thought it would be a good idea to buy a 1300cc hyperbike when they were 18 and immediately binned it. The Hayabusa has the reputation of being a widow maker due to its brilliant performance. It has a top speed of almost 220 mph and will run the quarter mile in just 9.89 seconds at 143 mph. And it’s a bike that greatly deserves your respect.
MTT Turbine Superbike Y2K
Let’s just start off by saying, it has a Rolls Royce 250-C18 Turboshaft engine. In layman’s terms, it’s a jet turbine engine taken out of a helicopter. That’s right, this is a jet engine’d motorcycle. Hearing this motorcycle up close and personal has the potential to cause irreparable ear damage, and twisting the throttle has the tendency to soil the pants of even the most experienced of riders. The MTT Y2K only has two gears and has the potential to hit warp speeds of 250 mph…theoretically. No one has had the cajónes to try to get it up to that speed. Yet…
The Kawasaki H2R is the newest bike on this list. Developed in secret by Kawasaki’s MotoGP team, the H2R is a quantum leap in motorcycle design. Its trellis frame is made of high tensile steel that somehow offers both stiffness and flexibility for on track workouts. Its fairings are carbon fiber. Its wheels are cast aluminum, which make them extremely rigid and light. And it uses a supercharged 998cc engine that produces a staggering 300 horsepower. Just think of this bike as an F-22 Raptor for the street.
When Dodge came out with the Tomahawk, everyone said, “Dodge has lost its mind.” The Tomahawk was a concept bike that actually ran, unlike many concepts. It used a 8.3L Viper-sourced V10 engine, a quad-tire system, and a two-speed transmission. The Tomahawk made over 500 horsepower and theoretically had a top speed of over 300 mph. Now we say theoretically, because no one is sure if anyone has actually taken one of these bikes up to its top speed. Only nine were ever built, and Dodge stressed at the time that these were really designed as rolling sculptures. However, the Tomahawk is probably the closest we’ve ever been to Star Wars style speeder bike, and we have to give it due credit.
