2018 Shelby GT500 to get 740 hp?

Ford might be about to take the horsepower crown from Dodge.

A recent report indicates the 2018 Shelby GT500 will land with about 740 horsepower, a figure that will give it 33 more horses than Dodge’s Hellcat-powered Charger and Challenger. Power will allegedly come from a new, 5.0-liter EcoBoost V8 engine fitted with direct-injection and a pair of turbochargers.

News of the eight-cylinder engine contradicts an earlier report that claims the GT500 will land with a de-tuned version of the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 that powers the Ferrari-fighting GT. However, the report claimed the six would generate over 600 horsepower, and Ford has previously hinted that the next GT500’s engine will be more powerful than the Hellcat’s.

The GT500 is also expected to go on a significant diet. It will make extensive use of lightweight materials such as carbon fiber and aluminum in order to weight as little as possible. Shedding weight will also help the GT500 on the efficiency front, regardless of how many cylinders it has under the hood.

Ford hasn’t revealed what form the next-generation Shelby GT500 will take. We might not have to wait long to find out, because the super-‘Stang is expected to make its debut either late this year at the Los Angeles Auto Show or early next year during the Detroit Auto Show. Look for it to land in showrooms in time for the 2018 model year.
