The Dodge Omni first broke into the auto scene back in 1977 but it wasn’t until 1984 when the performance-oriented Omni GLH (Goes Like Hell) was unleashed to the public. In its short lifespan – it only lasted until 1986 – the Omni GLH was able to create a loyal fan base that included no less than Carroll Shelby himself. In fact, the final 500 units of the 1985 Omni GLH-T were all sold to Shelby, who in turn, modified them to become the 1986 Shelby GLHS (Goes Like Hell S’More).
It’s an incredible history for a car that lasted only a few years. That history has remained untouched, at least until now. Yes, Dodge is bringing back the classic GLH name at the 2015 SEMA Auto Show in the form of the Dodge Dart GLH Concept.
For all intents and purposes, the Dart GLH Concept is a tribute car to the original Omni GLH, a cult classic that has somehow never received its just due. It’s a fitting homage to one of Dodge’s most underrated classics and it shows throughout the Dart GLH Concept’s dramatic styling. The original Omni GLH may have been lost to history and the occasional wall posters hanging on someone’s room, but its memory now lives on through the Dart GLH Concept.
Work on the Dart GLH Concept was done with the help of Mopar as shown by the extensive amount of new components and accessories from Chrysler’ s in-house performance division.
Dodge Dart GLH Concept
The model itself may have changed, but it goes without saying that the Dart GLH Concept has some of the styling cues that defined the original Omni GLH. The concept itself gets a Pitch Black body finish, the same color as that of the 500 Omni GLH-T models that were sold to Shelby back in 1986.

Beyond the body finish hat tip, the Dart GLH Concept also gets plenty of bits and pieces from FCA’s parts-and-accessories division. It’s got a modern body kit comprised of a front chin splitter, side sill accents and rear fascia diffuser. It also has an aluminum hood that vaguely draws its own inspiration from the Hellcat, red accents on the lower body that was another trademark design of the OG, and a new set of 18-inch, anodized black Mopar wheels with matching Mopar center caps.
There’s a lot of red found in the Dart GLH Concept’s cabin and that didn’t come by accident. Since the original Omni GLH made generous use of the color, the tribute model is following in its proverbial footsteps with the red mesh seat inserts on the Katzkin leather seats and the red stitching that complements the red lower body trim on the Dart’s exterior. As per usual, Mopar bits can also be found on the interior, specifically the sill plates, pedal kit, shift knob, and floor mats.
The Dart GLH Concept’s engine is still the same 2.4-liter MultiAir Tigershark engine that pumps out a steady 184 horsepower and and 174 pound-feet of torque. No modifications were done to improve on that number. In fact, the only notable performance upgrade, if you can even call it that, are the new exhaust tips that provides little benefit apart from giving the engine a throatier growl.
Without the engine mods, the Dart GLH Concept should still be able to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 8.2 seconds, or about 1.7 seconds than the tried-and-true Omni GLHS. The Dart GLH Concept is still good for a top speed of about 130 mph so at least it has that going for it.
Dodge Dart GLH Concept
I love a lot of things about the Dart GLH Concept, but like the saying goes, “it takes one bad apple to ruin the entire bunch.” In this case, I can’t wrap myself around a very important part of the Omni GLH’s legacy – it was a performance car – that neither Chrysler, nor Dodge or Mopar thought of when they were developing this tribute concept. The Omni GLH, in particular, had a 175-horsepower engine that allowed it to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.5 seconds. Had I been asked beforehand what I would expect from a tribute model to the OG Omni, I would’ve said “massive performance” right off the bat. But alas, the Dart GLH Concept wasn’t given that treatment and because of that, I don’t feel that it’s a proper tribute to one of America’s first legitimate hot hatchbacks.

The Dodge Omni GLH (Goes Like Hell) owns a special spot in the Dodge brand’s 100-plus year pantheon, and the brand’s current compact car pays homage to that beloved 1980s-era ride with the Dodge Dart GLH Concept.
Dodge Dart GLH Concept
The athletic, stylish exterior of the Dodge Dart GLH Concept is colored Pitch Black and looks ready to pounce with an in-your-face, production front fascia with concept grille details and a Mopar Performance aluminum hood. A production front chin splitter, side sill accents and rear fascia diffuser form a Mopar body kit that creates a speedy, nimble appearance.
Red accents on the lower body provide an outline reminiscent of the original Omni GLH. The Dart GLH Concept rides on lightweight Mopar 18-inch wheels, painted anodized black, with matching Mopar center caps. Stopping power is upgraded with a Dart high-performance brake kit by Mopar. Exhaust tips add an aggressive growl, and a Mopar Design badge adorns the decklid.
Inside, the all-black Katzkin leather seats are modified with concept red mesh seat inserts and red stitch accent touches on the bolsters and armrest. Red on the door pulls and instrument panel tracer are production offerings. The enhanced interior adds extra performance with a Dodge sport steering wheel, Mopar pedal kit, Mopar shift knob, Mopar premium carpet mats and Mopar door sill guards featuring the Dart logo.
